Extreme Sailing Series 2018

The so-called Formula 1 of sail, Extreme Sailing Series, consisting of seven GC32 catamarans equipped with hydrofoils, among which is the local team Spanish Impulse, first team invited from the championship composed of Olympic participants and sailors who already participated in the last edition 2017, will begin to compete in Barcelona in the third act of the 2018 season. The appointment is in front of the beaches of Barceloneta from Thursday 14 to Sunday 17 led by the Cantabrian skipper Diego Botín.

Barcelona can offer two types of wind and navigation conditions:

  • The usual thermal wind known as Garbí (coming from the southwest in Barcelona)
  • The most occasional Levante wind that can be accompanied by strong waves

When returning to Barcelona for the second consecutive year, most of the crews know well the challenges of the racing field and hope that previous experience will help them in their performance.

The spectacle in the water will be completed with the fleet of eight Flying Phantom, small and fast catamarans of only 5.5 meters in length and 165kg in weight, manned by two sailors, who dispute their championship as part of some Extreme Sailing Series events.

Catalan crew members Jordi Booth and Joan Costa will sail aboard the Red Bull Sailing Team. The current leaders of the classification are Team France Jeune.
